Permanent disability benefits can be claimed by members who have a permanent disability to an extent where they will never be able to work again.
When is a TPD benefit payable?
A total and permanent disability (TPD) benefit is payable if you have a disability and the QSuper Board of Trustees, after considering relevant medical opinions, is satisfied you're unlikely to ever work again in any job for which you're reasonably qualified by education, training, or experience.
In the first 10 years of cover, the insured benefit will not be paid if the cause of your death or disability is related to a medical condition that existed before this cover started.
To find out your level of TPD cover, check the details on your latest benefit statement or contact us.
What is the amount of my TPD benefit?
Accumulation account holders
If you were under age 65 when your TPD claim was approved, the amount paid would be the balance of your account, plus the value of any insurance payable. You can choose to make withdrawals of a minimum of $2,000 at any time, or you can withdraw your benefit as a lump sum.
If you were age 65 or over when your TPD claim was approved, the amount paid would be the balance of your account. Your benefit would be paid as a lump sum.
Defined benefit account holders
The amount paid would be the current balance of your account, plus, if under age 55, a benefit to compensate for your future membership to age 55. If you are under age 55, you can choose to have your benefit paid as a lump sum or as an indexed lifetime pension, guaranteed to be paid for 5 years. If you were to die within that 5-year period, the balance of the guaranteed amount would be paid to your estate.
If you are under age 70, any additional insurance units that you have taken out may also be payable. You can choose to make withdrawals of a minimum of $2,000 at any time, or you can withdraw your benefit as a lump sum.
If you were paid a lump sum TPD benefit and died within 12 months of being paid, your dependent children may still receive the fortnightly pension if the cause of the your death is the same as or related to the condition which resulted in your TPD benefit.
